How and When to See an Advisor in the College

When you seek help from a college academic advisor, it is usually best to schedule an appointment, although we also see students in emergency situations on a walk-in basis. Either way, please come to 1117 Cheadle Hall or call (805) 893-3201 or (805) 893-2038 and start by talking to one of our advising assistants.

Appointments are planned to last 30 minutes. We pull records ahead of time so that advisors can prepare to meet with you.

Kinds of questions to bring to an appointment:

  • Choice of major (click here if you are Undeclared)
  • Double major or minor
  • Long-range curriculum planning, including completing your degree within the maximum of 200 units
  • EAP or other study abroad programs
  • Time off from UCSB
  • How to return to UCSB after an absence
  • How to be more academically successful
  • Summer enrollment (here or elsewhere)
  • College Honors Program
  • Dean's recommendations for scholarships or applications to other programs

Walk-ins are handled on a first-come/first-served basis, with records pulled as needed. For walk-in advising, we can focus only on one particular issue, and we limit our meeting to about 15 minutes.

Appropriate reasons to ask to see an advisor on a walk-in basis:

  • State of crisis or emergency affecting academic progress
  • Repeat a course you have already repeated
  • Complete withdrawal (whether you’re sure or just considering it)
  • Intercampus visitor application
  • Enrollment agreement (contract)
  • Transfer from Engineering or Creative Studies to Letters and
    Science
  • Athletic eligibility
  • Non-clearance (for graduation) statement from the Office of the Registrar
  • Registration blocks
  • Probation questions
