Scholarships

Outstanding UCSB undergraduate students should click above on "Scholarships Requiring UCSB Endorsement" to investigate prestigious national and international scholarship opportunities.

These scholarships have rigorous and highly competitive application processes, so students must begin their applications well before the deadlines and should consult with the Scholarships Coordinator via email, scholarships@ltsc.ucsb.edu, or by scheduling an appointment in the the Letters and Science Advising Center, 1117 Cheadle Hall, (805) 893-2038.

All of these scholarships require that students be endorsed by their campuses.  See the Campus Application Information for each of the scholarships for details on the UCSB endorsement process.

Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program
Assists arts, humanities, or social science students who have financial need as they apply to graduate school and provides considerable financial support after admission to graduate school.

The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduated course of study. Each scholar receives $2,000 to help with the costs of applying to graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants. Scholars are encouraged to begin graduated study as soon as possible following graduation from college, and must utilize all of the funding within five years of completion of undergraduate studies.

 

Boren (NSEP) Study Abroad Scholarships
Provides U.S. undergraduates with the resources to study less commonly studied languages and cultures in an UCSB approved study abroad program.

Program provides U.S. undergraduates with the resources and encouragement needed to acquire skills and experience in less commonly studied languages and cultures. Applicants must engage in a study abroad program that meets UCSB standards. Depending on financial need, awards may cover up to $10,000 of the costs of the study abroad program.

 

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows Program
A paid, year-long fellowship in the area of international affairs after graduation.

Award: Salary and benefits.
Designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Students will be hired to work at the Endowment on a full-time basis for period of one year. Applicants are accepted only from graduating college seniors or individuals who have graduated within the past year and must have completed a significant amount of course work in area of international politics and economics.

 

Established in 1959 at the recommendation of Winston Churchill himself, the Winston Churchill Foundation offers America students of exceptional ability and outstanding achievement the opportunity to pursue one year of graduate studies in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences at Churchill College, the University of Cambridge. The Foundations offers twelve Churchill Scholarships each year. The scholarship covering all University and College tuition and fees and, in addition, students receive a living allowance and a travel allowing of up to $1,000.

Barry Goldwater Scholarship
For outstanding students interested in careers in mathematics, natural science, or engineering

Amount of award varies. This scholarship is for juniors or seniors interested in a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. Campus nomination is required. Interested students should contact the URCA office well in advance of the deadline.

 

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award
Awarded to students in performing arts, visual arts, and creative writing with significant demonstrated financial need to pursue up to three years of study at an accredited graduate institution in the US or abroad.

Marshall Scholarship
Offers intellectually distinguished young Americans the opportunity to attend graduate school for two years in any discipline in the United Kingdom.

This program offers intellectually distinguished young Americans a chance to study in the United Kingdom, while being introduced to the British way of life and British social and academic values. Up to forty scholarships will be awarded which are tenable at any British University and cover two years of study in any discipline, at either undergraduate or graduate level.

 

George Mitchell Scholarship
For graduate-level studies in all fields in Ireland.

Scholarships are for graduate-level studies at participating institutions of higher learning in Ireland. The participating universities contribute the cost of tuition and room. In addition, each Scholar will receive a stipend of $11,000 for other expenses.

 

The Pahl "Making a Difference" Award
Awarded to an upper-division student, preferably a graduating senior in the social sciences, involved as a volunteer in community and/or campus-related activities who has written a course-related paper which applies learning theories to real-world contemporary issues.

Established by UCSB alumni, Louise and Stephen Pahl, the "Making a Difference" Award will be given at commencement to honor an upper-division student, preferably a graduating senior in the social sciences, who is involved as a volunteer in community and/or campus-related activities, and who has written a course-related paper which applies learning theories to real-world contemporary issues.


Rhodes Scholarship
The most prestigious of scholarships, funds two or three years of post-bachelor study at Oxford University in Great Britain.

One of the most prestigious awards, funds two or three years of post-bachelor study at Oxford University in Great Britain. The award covers educational and living expenses. Initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the scholarships bring outstanding students from nineteen countries and five continents to Oxford University. Rhodes Scholars may pursue either a second bachelor's degree or a higher degree. Selectors look for outstanding intellectual and academic achievement (typically a minimum 3.9 GPA). Applicants must also show integrity of character, interest in and concern for others, leadership ability, and the energy to fully use their talents.

 

The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation
Awards fifteen California students $10,000 scholarships to support public service projects during the students’ senior years.

The Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship Foundation was created as a memorial to the late Donald Strauss, who demonstrated a strong, lifelong commitment to public service and education. The Foundation annually awards fifteen $10,000 scholarships to California college juniors who've reflected a similar commitment.

 

Harry S Truman Scholarship
For juniors who are committed to public service careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education, etc.

For junior level students, this scholarship is awarded to individuals who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service. Students are provided with financial support for graduate study, leadership training, and fellowship with other students who are committed to making a difference through public service.

 

Morris K Udall Foundation
Provides up to $5,000 for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors who either have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment or are Native Americans or Alaska Natives interested in fields related to Native health care or tribal public policy.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors who either 1) have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment; or 2) are Native Americans or Alaska Natives in fields related to Native health care or tribal public policy. The Udall Foundation seeks outstanding students who demonstrate, through their areas of study and public service activities, a commitment to and potential for making significant contributions in their fields.

Awards

UCSB gives awards at Commencement and other celebrations, on the basis of academic performance, co-curricular or extra-curricular achievement, or a mixture.  Nomination rules vary, but most encourage students with strong records to initiate their own nominations.  Nomination periods are announced on the web, in flyers and by email, usually in late Winter or early Spring.  Nominations and enquiries CANNOT be considered outside the nomination periods.

Daniel Aldrich, Jr. Outstanding Senior Award
Awarded to a graduating senior in the College of Letters and Science for outstanding scholarship and contributions to the campus community, in memory of Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr., Chancellor and Professor of Soils and Plant Nutrition, University of California at Irvine, and Acting Chancellor of UCSB, 1986-87.

Letters and Sciences Divisional Awards

Each Division (Humanities and Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Mathematics, Life and Physical Sciences), has an award for outstanding academic achievement.  Each recipient must graduate during the academic year ending at Commencement: Fall and Winter graduates are included.  Nominees should have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.60. 
Applying.  Candidates are nominated by faculty and departments.  Students can ask a faculty member to nominate them.  Nomination requirements will be announced when the nomination period opens.  Nominees for these Awards will automatically be considered for the Aldrich Award above.


William R. Reardon Undergraduate Award (Humanities and Fine Arts)
This recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the arts or humanities. It honors a professor emeritus of Dramatic Art (1965-86) and former Associate Dean in the College of Letters and Science (1979-86). 

Francis Colville and Terry Dearborn Memorial Award (Science)
This recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a College of Letters and Science honors student majoring in the sciences.  Frances M. Colville was Associate Professor of Physical Education (1955-64), and Terry H. Luis Leal Undergraduate Award (Social Sciences)
This recognizes outstanding interdisciplinary academic achievement of a student in the social sciences in honor of Don Luis Leal, a professor and National Medal of Humanities winner whose presence and scholarship greatly enriched the UCSB campus for many years
